"Sanctuary Wednesday" offers parallel projects and play
Latest community offering from Alton Rainbow Collective
After revealing their new name, Alton Rainbow Collective, a pro-LGBTQ+ group dedicated to providing community to otherwise marginalized individuals, announced several new offerings. Previously called the Piasa Rainbow Collective, the blossoming group has offered community mixers, craft nights, and fundraising for the LGBTQ Foundation of Kansas in the wake of transphobic new license laws.
Starting this evening at 5 p.m. until the closure of the Milton Schoolhouse, the group is hosting “Sanctuary Wednesdays,” a biweekly event in which people can simply exist in a third space together with “very little structure,” Alton Rainbow Collective Organizer Lumi said in a Facebook message Tuesday.
“[It’s] really just a chance to come hang out in a safe space with community, or if you prefer, bring something to work on and just body double or collaborate with others,” they added. “Sanctuary Wednesdays are going to be a time to come together and just hang out in whatever way we choose. Bring that project you’re working on. Start a new one. Write furiously and mysteriously in your notebook in the corner. Bring a board game for people to play. Make a new friend. Make three new friends. Start a rivalry. Put on headphones and enjoy being around safe people, but working on your own thing. start a new religion. Bring back a dead one. Talk about your passions. Share a poem you wrote. If you’re looking for community and the space to connect and enjoy being out at a place that is safe and isn’t a bar.”
The event space may change with each offering, from Milton businesses, Maeva’s, and CatCo to local parks. Lumi said the location would be announced by the group with plenty of notice before each biweekly event.
